Mallo Cups
I am a big fan of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, which are one of my favorite candies. When I was younger, I had another favorite, a cousin to the peanut butter cup called Mallo Cup by Boyer Candies. Boyer also had a version of the Peanut Butter Cup that was decent, but a step below the Reese's version. The Boyer Mallo Cup always reminds me of my childhood.
The Mallo Cup is constructed the same way as a peanut butter cup, but is filled with a white sticky marshmallow filling that is dense and sweet. If you have ever had a chocolate covered marshmallow, you are familiar with the spongy texture. The Mallo Cup has a denser more liquidy marshmallow that has a different texture and mouth appeal. The sweet filling is a nice contrast to the thick milk chocolate and coconut shell.
Boyer Candies was started in the early 1930's by brothers (named Boyer) who fiddled with candy recipes in their kitchen. The demand for the early candies in Altoona, Pennsylvania soon required more than a family kitchen for production. They dabbled in several candy concepts from molded chocolate animals to nut and fudge candies. After moving into a larger facility, they stumbled on the idea of creating a chocolate covered marshmallow creme. Creating the product proved a task, until mom saved the day by suggesting that they get the creme to harden by forming the candies in cupcake papers. The candy quickly caught on, becoming the cornerstone of the company.
