Crunchie Honeycomb Candy
I took a trip to England a couple of years ago. I returned with a carry-on bag stuffed to the max with good chocolate. Cadbury's in the United States is not the same. It is made by the Nestle's Corporation and does not have the same quality as the real thing. I stocked up on all my favorites, Crunchies, Smarties, Flake's, Aero's, Wispa's, Curly Wurly's, Turkish Delight...you name it (Some of those are Nestle's products...but those are better in England, too!)
Crunchie comes in a bright yellow (or yellow and purple) foil wrapper with red letters crossing the front. If you get lucky enough to find one in an import store or specialty candy shop, you should treat yourself. Crunchie is made from a honeycomb center covered in that rich Cadbury chocolate. The chocolate shell on this candy is thin, but adds a luxurious flavor experience to the honeycomb that melts in your mouth. I have found homemade honeycomb candy here in South Carolina and it was actually pretty good...but Cadbury is the Gold Standard in this type of candy.
You may wonder what I mean by honeycomb center. Honeycomb candy is sometimes called sponge candy or Hokey Pokey. It is a porous toffee-like candy that is made from sugar, corn syrup (sometimes honey...but not in the Crunchie version) and baking soda. The baking soda blows the candy up making it porous. This causes the candy to melt in your mouth into a thick rich chewy textured treat. This honeycomb center is then dipped in a rich Cadbury chocolate that gives it the quality that you just won't find in most candy bars.
