I was standing at the checkout line yesterday and noticed that the M&Ms Dark Chocolate were on clearance. I have seen these before, but never purchased a bag. Being a chocolate lover and purveyor or Dark Chocolate in particular, I decided to give them a try. I like products from the Mars Company, especially M&Ms so I guessed that I would not be disappointed.
Dark Chocolate Flavor
Dark Chocolate has a distinct flavor. I enjoy dark chocolate as one might gather from my reviews of Hershey's Cacao Reserve, Chocolate Riesen and Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate. Because of the candy shell on M&Ms you cannot really taste the dark chocolate if you eat them individually. What I noticed is that the flavor was more enhanced by eating them several at a time. For some reason the candy shell interferes with the experience. If you are a dark chocolate lover, then eat them in abundance. You will enjoy the flavor much more.
Packaging
I am not really sure why M&Ms Dark Chocolate haven’t done better than they have. If I were to make a suggestion to the company, I would point to the packaging. The flavor of these M&Ms meets with the high standards I have come to expect from this company. However, I think that the purple packaging is not very appealing. Looking at the packaging of other dark chocolates (to give an indication that it is a different product), I would suggest a burgundy wrapper might be more appealing. Hershey’s Dark Chocolate and Cacao Reserve use burgundy and it seems more appealing.
