Chock Full O Nuts Coffee

I need my morning to coffee to survive. Well, maybe that's an overstatement, but like many Americans, I am an addict. I also tend to be a coffee prude. I'm not real big on the fufu drinks that have become so popular. I just like a good cup of coffee...or Americano if I'm using my West Bend Espresso Maker Combo. I have a few reliable coffees that like, which includes a locally roasted blend, Starbucks, Seattle's Best and Dunkin Donuts. However, sometimes I like to take things back to the basics and enjoy a good cup of Chock Full O' Nuts.

Chock Full O' Nuts is the coffee my grandpa used to drink. The only brands I ever remember seeing at this house were Chock Full O' Nuts or Eight O'Clock Coffee. I grew up in Rhode Island, where coffee is part of the culture. My grandpa used to brew an extra pot in the morning, and we would drink it as Ice Coffee (back in the early 70s before it became a fufu drink), or we would mix it with vanilla ice cream and make coffee cabinets (Cabinet being another term for milkshake). Drinking a cup of Chock Full O' Nuts takes me back in time.

Chock Full O' Nuts is a brand with history. Why nuts...I thought coffee came from beans? This brand started out as a chain of Nut stores in New York owned by William Black. There were eighteen of them. The depression hurt business, so Black converted his store to a chain of coffee shops where a cup of coffee and a sandwich cost a nickel. During the 1950's this brand began selling in grocery stores, accompanied by television commercials. This campaign propelled the brand to number one in New York.
